What did the 2026 World Cup do to Messi v Ronaldo?

Published By The GOAT Debate

Messi’s Argentina lost the final to Spain after extra time, with eight goals and four assists from him. Ronaldo’s Portugal lost to Spain in the round of 16, with three goals. I went through the numbers to see what it means for the debate.

The 2026 World Cup finished on 19 July. Spain beat Argentina 1–0 after extra time in the final at MetLife Stadium, and Portugal had gone out almost two weeks earlier, in the round of 16. Both Messi and Ronaldo have now played their last World Cup.

I wanted to go through what each of them did and what it means for the debate, so I put the numbers in one place.

Let’s dive in!

How the two teams got there

The tournament had 48 teams and a new round of 32. Argentina won Group J with three wins (3–0 Algeria, 2–0 Austria, then Jordan) and went through Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland and England before the final. By the results lists on ESPN, two of the five knockout games before the final went to extra time. The final was decided by a substitute, Ferran Torres, in the 106th minute (Squawka).

Portugal drew with Congo DR (1–1) and Colombia (0–0) and beat Uzbekistan 5–0 in the group. In the round of 32 they beat Croatia 2–1 on 2 July, with Gonçalo Ramos heading the winner in stoppage time. On 6 July Spain won the round-of-16 tie 1–0 on a late Mikel Merino goal (CBS Sports). Spain went on to win the tournament.

Messi scored 8 goals to Ronaldo’s 3, almost three times as many. Add the assists and it’s 12 goal contributions against 3, which is 4x more. That’s a lot of goals from a 39-year-old.

Messi’s eight goals came as a hat-trick against Algeria, two against Austria and one each against Jordan, Cape Verde and Egypt. His 83rd-minute goal against Egypt in the round of 16 was an equaliser. In the semi-final against England he scored nothing but set up both late goals, for Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez, in a 2–1 win (Fox Sports).

Ronaldo’s three came as two in the first half against Uzbekistan on 23 June and a penalty against Croatia on 2 July. At 41 he became the first man to score at six World Cups, passed Eusébio as Portugal’s top World Cup scorer, and was the oldest player to score in a World Cup knockout game (Yahoo Sports, ESPN). The penalty was his first goal in a World Cup knockout match. Against Spain he put two shots on target and did not score.

The career ledger after 2026

Both players played six World Cups, so here are the career totals 👇

Messi has 21 World Cup goals to Ronaldo’s 11, almost twice as many. On assists it’s 12 to 2, which is 6x more. He also has the one title, from 2022.

Messi’s twenty-first goal made him the World Cup’s top scorer for a few weeks. He passed Miroslav Klose’s 16 against Austria on 22 June. Then Kylian Mbappé scored twice in the third-place match on 18 July and finished on 22 (ESPN). So the all-time scoring record no longer belongs to either man in this debate. Messi still holds the appearance record and the assist record.

What they said about what comes next

Ronaldo said before the Spain game that it would be his last World Cup. Here’s how CBS Sports reported it 👇

This will be my last World Cup, but let’s hope tomorrow isn’t my last game.

That was reported by CBS Sports. He didn’t stop straight away. On 24 September he played in a 1–0 Nations League win over Wales in Lisbon, his 234th cap, and had a goal ruled out for offside (Yahoo Sports, Sky Sports). That turned out to be his last game for Portugal. On 30 September he left the squad and ended his international career with immediate effect, on 234 caps and 146 goals (Goal). For his live goal count, see /1000.

Messi said before the final that a 2030 World Cup was “definitely not” on, and on 31 August announced that he is retiring from international football (NBC News). At the time of writing, his farewell match is the friendly against Benin in Buenos Aires on 6 October. He finishes with 207 caps and 125 goals, going into that game (as of 1 October 2026), and carries on at Inter Miami.

Did it move the argument?

For Messi, the tournament added to a case that was already ahead on this one measure. He scored in the group, in the round of 32, in the round of 16, and made the goals in the semi-final. At 39 he led his team to a final that went to extra time against the eventual champions. He did not win it, which matters: the 2022 title is still the only one. He also lost the scoring record to a man a decade younger.

For Ronaldo, I think the honest reading is mixed. The records are real and they are unusual: six tournaments, a goal at each, and the oldest man to score in a knockout game. But the thing his critics point to, a World Cup run, did not arrive. Three goals, one a penalty, and out in the round of 16 to the champions, in a game decided by one goal in stoppage time. That is not a collapse, but it is not a run either.

So here is my summary: the World Cup column of the debate was already lopsided and it is a little more so. Ronaldo’s case never rested on it, and neither his club career nor his international goals record changed this summer. If you weight tournaments heavily, you got another data point for Messi. If you weight longevity and volume, you got another for Ronaldo, who is still playing for his country.
