Every Messi v Ronaldo poll, and what it said

Published By The GOAT Debate

Messi wins most of the polls with a proper sample; Ronaldo wins the open online votes. Here is every major Messi v Ronaldo poll I could check, with the date, who was asked and what they said.

Every few months someone publishes a poll that settles Messi v Ronaldo, and it never does. So I put the major ones in one table, with the date, who was asked and what they said. Each figure was checked against the source linked beside it on 9 October 2026; where I couldn’t check one, it is left out and the reason is at the bottom.

Messi wins four: all three YouGov polls and Kicker’s poll of players. Ronaldo wins three: Marca, Maxifoot and The Athletic. NTU’s study splits by country, with seven of the 26 showing no clear preference either way.

They didn’t all ask the same question

This is the part most round-ups skip. The polls are not measuring the same thing, so lining up the percentages is only half the story.

  • Best right now, or best ever? Kicker asked Bundesliga players who was the best in the world at that moment, after the 2019–20 season. YouGov’s 2015 poll asked the same of fans. YouGov’s 2023 and 2026 polls asked about the greatest of all time. Maxifoot asked about the last 15 years.
  • Two players, or a field? YouGov 2023 offered 25 names, and Pelé won it with 31%, ahead of Messi’s 27%. Ronaldo’s 5% tied him with George Best and Diego Maradona. In July 2026, 34% of fans picked someone other than either of them. Marca’s final, Maxifoot and The Athletic were straight head-to-heads.
  • Career, or player? The Athletic’s 66% for Ronaldo answered “who has had the better career”, which counts trophies and longevity as much as how anyone played.
  • A sample, or whoever turns up? YouGov and NTU surveyed a panel. Marca and Maxifoot counted whoever clicked, and an open vote rewards whichever following turns up in bigger numbers that week.
  • What the respondents think, or what they are like? NTU’s study is about the people, not the players: it found that people who call themselves more liberal tended to favour Messi and those who call themselves more conservative tended to favour Ronaldo, most strongly among the young.

Recency matters too. YouGov ran its 2023 poll five weeks after Messi won the World Cup, and published its 2026 one three days after he lost the final. In the same July 2026 release, Messi’s net favourability in Britain had fallen from +46 to −15 during the tournament, and fans still backed him as the greatest by 38% to 16%.

What I left out, and why

Two numbers that get passed around didn’t make the table.

  • The “32 legends, Messi 25–7” tally is credited to Mirror Football in early October 2026. I could find it only in a rewrite on another site, not in the Mirror, so I couldn’t check it. It is also a count of things former players have said over the years, not a poll.
  • Maxifoot is sometimes reported as a Messi win. At least one English-language outlet gave Messi the 55.2%. Maxifoot’s own result page gives it to Ronaldo, with 25,832 votes to Messi’s 20,934, and the vote counts add up to its 46,766 total. The table follows Maxifoot.

The Athletic’s survey is behind a paywall, so its row rests on the outlets that reported it. Kicker’s 2020 poll is reported the same way. I left the Marca vote counts out for the same reason and kept only the percentages, which more than one report gives.

The one where every vote costs a dollar

The last row is ours. Every poll above is free to answer, which is why each one gets one answer per person, or per click. At The GOAT Debate a vote costs $1 and earns a card in your camp, so the tally on the front page is a count of money, not of clicks. It moves only when someone pays, and moves back if they take a refund. It doesn’t settle the argument either, but it is the only one of these that is never finished.

Thank you 🙏

I hope you found this round-up helpful 🔥 If a new poll comes out, I’ll add it here. If you’ve made up your mind, pick your side — $1 is one vote and every vote gets you a card. No prize, just bragging rights. You can follow @TheGoatDebateIO on X for more.
