Ronaldo’s road
to 1,000.
Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 979 senior goals for club and country. 21 more and he arrives at a thousand — a number so large that nobody quite agrees who has ever reached it. Here is the distance, the arithmetic, and the argument it reopens.

01 / The pace
When could it happen?
There is no date to circle. A milestone arrives when a player is picked, is fit and finds the net, and no table predicts those three. What a table can do is turn 21 goals into appearances.
| Scoring rate | Appearances |
|---|---|
| A goal every other appearance (0.50) | 42 |
| Three in every four (0.75) | 28 |
| One a game (1.00) | 21 |
Even the slowest row here fits inside one busy season of club and international football, which is why this countdown is measured in months rather than years. Illustrative scenarios only — selection, fixtures, injury and form all move the finish.
02 / The count
A number with a source.
The last editorial snapshot follows CR7 Counter. Last successful check: 15 September 2026 UTC.
The API connection is awaiting setup and coverage verification. Until then the total and its date remain unchanged. Published totals follow different rules; read the methodology before comparing them.
03 / The company
Has anyone done it before?
That depends entirely on who is counting. Josef Bican, Pelé and Romário have each been credited with more than a thousand career goals, and each of those claims rests on a different rule about which matches count — wartime leagues, tour games, friendlies, youth football. No single ledger settles it, and the people who maintain the rival ones have been arguing for decades.
Which is why the narrow claim is the interesting one: a thousand goals in senior professional football, in an era when every single one is filmed, logged and disputed within the hour.
04 / The rules
What counts as a goal?
Most published totals count senior football for clubs and country: league, domestic cups, continental competition and internationals. They part company over friendlies, pre-season tours, matches later annulled, and goals reassigned weeks afterwards by a competition’s own panel.
A handful of goals live in that gap, which is how two careful sources end up three or four apart. Nothing on this page is an official record. Where a number matters to you, take it from the competition that recorded it — and read the methodology before you compare two of them.
Asked and answered
The short version.
How many goals has Ronaldo scored?
979, in the senior club-and-country count this page follows, checked on 15 September 2026 UTC. That leaves him 21 short of a thousand.
When will he reach 1,000 goals?
Nobody can date it. At three goals in every four appearances it is about 28 more matches; at a goal every other appearance, 42. Both are arithmetic, not forecasts.
Why does another site show a different number?
Either it counts different matches — friendlies and tour games are the usual culprits — or one of the two is a day behind the football. Check the date first, then the methodology.
Does this counter update live?
No. Daily API checks are awaiting setup. The current number is a dated editorial snapshot.
Would 1,000 goals make him the greatest?
That is the whole argument, and a goal total has never ended it. It is the question the rest of this site exists to count.
Is this page official?
No. The GOAT Debate is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Ronaldo, any club, league or federation. The names here identify the subjects of a public argument.
The number grows. The argument stays.
Does 1,000 settle it?
A thousand goals is a fact. Whether it makes him the greatest is not, and no number ever will — that part gets voted on, every day, by people who will never agree. This is where the vote is counted. $1 buys one vote and one card in your camp; paid votes move the tally and nothing else does. No prize, no payout, no final whistle.
